Sweden deepens cooperation with Brazil

On Wednesday, in connection with Minister for Foreign Affairs Maria Malmer Stenergard’s visit to Brazil, the two countries signed a bilateral action plan for expanded cooperation. This signing took place against the backdrop of Sweden and Brazil celebrating 200 years of diplomatic relations this year.

“Brazil is Sweden’s largest trade partner in Latin America and we’ve had extensive cooperation for several years, particularly in the area of defence. The signing of this action plan means that we’re deepening our cooperation in a number of areas, such as trade, innovation, research and higher education, green transition and environmental issues,” says Ms Malmer Stenergard.
On 5 August, Ms Malmer Stenergard met with her counterpart Mauro Vieira in Brasilia. In conjunction with this meeting, the Ministers signed an updated bilateral action plan for the strategic partnership between the two countries. As one of the world’s largest democracies and a growing global actor, Brazil is a key partner for Sweden, underscoring the value of close and long-term bilateral cooperation.
The visit to Brazil was the first stage of Ms Malmer Stenergard’s trip to Latin America. She then travelled to Cali, Colombia, where the inauguration of the country’s new President, Abelardo de la Espriella, took place. In connection with her visit, Ms Malmer Stenergard also had bilateral meetings with counterparts in the Colombian Government.
