20. Banking, insurance and telephone and internet services

20.1 Bank services

Proof of identity and an address are required to open a bank account and obtain a bank card. The account holder's address does not have to be Swedish and can be a 'care of' address. Some banks also require a reference from a bank where the person previously has been a customer.

Some banks require a personal identity number (for individuals) or an organisation registration number (for embassies and other international entities). Organisation registration numbera are issued by the Swedish Tax Agency. If the bank account is intended for the Embassy, only authorised embassy staff may sign.

Banks in Sweden are private undertakings and make their own commercial decisions. We recommend diplomats to be in close contact with several banks.

Also, banks in Sweden are required to monitor and assess international transactions in accordance with applicable legislation, including sanctions regulations and anti-money laundering frameworks. As a result, transfers to certain countries may be subject to delays or restrictions.

20.2 Telephone and internet services

Here you can find and compare internet and telephone services available in Sweden:

Certain services offered by broadband and telephone service providers require that the subscriber is registered in the Swedish Population Register for the purpose such as invoicing. Therefore, diplomatic staff members are not able to subscribe to those services. In such case, the diplomatic staff member should contact another provider.

20.3 Insurance

Third party liability insurance (trafikförsäkring) is mandatory for all motor vehicle owners.

Private servants must be covered by a health and accident insurance (hälso- och olycksfallsförsäkring) to qualify for a visa.

Diplomatic staff are not covered by the subsidised health care system, even if they have a Swedish personal identity number.

Some insurance providers offer medical insurance to non-residents.

To be eligible for health insurance, the client has to complete a health declaration or undergo a full medical examination. The insurance company has an agreement with a medical company that will perform the medical examination.

Traffic insurance and insurance covering the loss of personal property (including theft) are offered by several insurance providers.

A comprehensive home insurance policy covers damage to private property due theft, fire, assault, etc.

The Swedish Consumers' Banking & Finance Bureau and the Swedish Consumers' Insurance Bureau provide further information.
